Make a DIY Book Safe For Storage

Most of the materials needed for a DIY book are items that you probably already have on hand at home. Another advantage of this smart stash is that a DIY book safe is more affordable than a wall-mounted safe in your home. The construction takes a few hours and gives you the assurance that your valuables are hidden and safe in your home.

What you need

• Metal ruler
• Ballpoint Pen Gold Pen
• Masking tape or painter’s tape
• Utility knife
• Small Brush
• Fitness weights or other heavy objects
• Electric drill (optional)
• Garbage or grocery bags

Material

• Old Book
• Mod Podge or white craft glue
• Waxed paper
• Black felt (optional)

Instructions

Cut a square hole in the pages of your book

Open the book anywhere between page 50 and 100. Cover the first 50 to 100 loose pages, the front and back covers of the book with plastic bags or grocery bags and glue them in place.

Measure 1 inch from the edge of the top side that is not covered with plastic and use a pen and ruler to draw a rectangular cutting template.

Apply Mod Podge or white glue generously to the outer edges of the book with a brush. Let the book dry.

Tip

If you want sharp inner corners, use a drill bit with a medium-sized drill bit and drill a hole in each of the four corners of the template.The holes help to cut the corners with the utility knife. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Use a metal ruler and a utility knife to cut the inside of the book. Take your time when cutting out the inner parts of the book. The more you are in a hurry, the more likely you are to have frayed edges.

Remove the cut squares from the center of the book and discard them.

Apply Mod Podge to the edges of the book

Apply Mod Podge or glue generously to the inner pages and the cut edges of the book with a brush. The lower part of the book is glued together, forming a box-like structure.
