Super Simple Felt Easter Basket That We Should Have Paul J. Cato, September 25, 2023October 18, 2023 It is a tradition in our family that I offer my daughter Coco a special Christmas gift for Easter. From the stuffed bunny of her childhood to the always loved pouf of a few years ago, the challenge for me is not only to find something different year after year, but also to do something fun and joyful without crossing the saccharine line. Although I have a reputation for being more excited than the average person about things made only in rough tones, I am just as excited about the bright pops of color that make these neutral fields stand out. And so, at least for me, it was no surprise that I decided to make this super simple Easter basket out of 100% cream wool felt with an Explosion of sharp seams on the edge. I was amazed at the beauty of the 5 mm thick felt sewn together. So soft and smooth, it felt like I was sculpting a clay container. And even the finished basket looks like a ceramic sculpture until you touch it and feel how soft it is! The grass inside is also made of wool felt and makes the perfect bed for painted eggs. For these photos, I couldn’t resist filling the baskets with subtle Araucana eggs, but I also like to imagine the early hours of Easter Day when Coco sees her felt Easter basket filled with the colorful treats of the day for the first time! – Page Material AROUND THE BASKET Two pieces of wool felt wool felt 12 x 12 inches, 5 mm. we used the ecru color. FOR THE GRASS A piece of 18 x 18 inch wool felt 1 mm pre-cut wool felt. We used ecru. Model Cut From a 5 mm thick piece of felt, cut out two long rectangles 3.5 cm wide x 11 cm long each. These two parts form the wall of the basket. From the same piece of felt, cut a 1-inch wide x 12-inch strip. This will be the handle of the basket. From the second 5mm piece of felt, use an X-Acto knife to cut a 7-inch diameter circle. Tip: We used a bowl, but anything round and the right size will work. Note: If you are not using the exact dimensions suggested, expand the long rectangles in order to have room for adjustments later. Double the linen thread and sew the two ends of the felt together with a simple whip stitch, making sure that the edges of the felt are aligned left and right. Since you see these dots in the basket, pay attention to your dots on each side. Before sewing the other ends together to form a basket wall, make a circle out of it and place it on the cut felt circle to confirm that it matches. If you left it a little long, now it’s time to trim the ends a little. Sew the two remaining short ends of the felt together so that they end in a round felt cuff. Place the felt cuff on the felt circle. Don’t worry if the cuff and the circle don’t match exactly. The felt is so soft and comes together when you sew. Sew the wall with an invisible whip stitch. Start the needle in the basket and slide the needle through the side panel at an extreme angle so as not to come out the other side of the felt instead of moving the needle parallel to the felt in the center of the felt. Continue to push the needle into the lower circle of the felt, but do not completely pull out of the lower part of the felt. Instead, remove the needle if you are only in the center of the circle, as shown above. Continue sewing in this way from the outside of the basket until you have Circled the entire circle.
